Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the evidence on risk factors for reinfection of syphilis. This is an integrative review, conducted using the PRISMA protocol, through the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) via the Virtual Health Library (VHL), US National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health (PubMed/MEDLINE), Web of Science, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and EMBASE, where thirteen articles were rigorously selected. The main factors associated with syphilis reinfection were co-infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Men who have Sex with Men (MSM). Other factors were also indicated, but less frequently, such as latent (asymptomatic) syphilis, age between 20 and 40, multiple sexual partners, among others. Considering the crucial role of specific populations as factors strongly associated with cases of syphilis reinfection, quality health education actions are needed in health institutions, by qualified health professionals. This review identifies decisive data for drawing up public strategies on the subject. The results elucidate the essential need for public health authorities to seek effective strategies to prevent re-infection with syphilis.
